Leadership and team development

"We are constantly running from pillar to post chasing the latest fad. Here is a revolutionary thought: Try doing the fundamentals extraordinarily well"

Leadership and Team Development

The balance and dynamics of leadership in society today are fundamentally shifting; many ideals and models that worked yesterday are considered archaic today.

“Media” sources, like LinkedIn et al bellow for a long list of behavioural ethics in their modern leaders and a call to arms against “toxic management”.

Has the leadership of yesterday really been that bad?

Question: What leadership model do your teams and organisation follow?

(or is the question no longer important, if indeed it ever was?)

Reflect:

If you are struggling to answer this question, as in this is something you don’t think about or, you are hurriedly reaching for your shelf and dusting down Adair’s 1973 Three Circles Model, you may want to consider for a moment what leadership means to you and how at a fundamental level it influences and is applied in your organisation (or not as it maybe).

Leadership is subjective and personal which creates an inconsistency if there is a lack of clarity on what the fundamentals are within the organisation. I don’t think there is a prescription for “leadership” and if you Google the term one or two results may come up (4.6 billion). I think there are a common set of leadership behaviours although I would caveat that they are to a degree context dependent. For example, the behaviours required in high reliability risk critical industries such as the emergency services and aviation are different to the world of finance, human resources or manufacturing. But, there are common behaviours for leading individuals and teams which can be used in any organisation, situation or context.

Qualifications, such as the Institute of Line Management are paramount in providing a framework in underpinning knowledge and professional credibility and these take time - but they don’t develop leadership skills and behaviours, they give you academia. Models give structure to leaders and managers starting their journey when they need it the most.

What do more seasoned and experienced leaders do to develop?

Question: What LEADERSHIP AND team development do you undertake within your organisation aside from qualifications - and what does progress look like?

Most leadership and team development is from the neck up. Performing Under Fire for Business is a unique experience for your team involving your whole body. It is an immersive and interactive experience and employs a wide range of visceral and unconventional learning methods and content.
